Student ID cards, transcripts, and graduation certificates can be obtained through e-government. Additionally, diplomas are issued by the Student Affairs Office after graduation at a single location.
2 - When and how are graduate program applications submitted?
Application dates, application procedures, required documents, and quotas are announced on our Institute's website before the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.
3 - Are there any science exams, interviews, written or oral exams in graduate education applications?
The necessary information is provided in the announcement for student admissions.
4 - Can I apply for graduate education before graduating from the undergraduate program?
Applicants for graduate programs must have a bachelor's degree.
5 - What should a candidate who is on the waiting list as a result of the graduate exam do?
Candidates who do not complete their registration within the specified time will be replaced by alternate candidates in order of their ranking. Candidates are responsible for following the announcements.
6 - Do I need to register every semester?
Students must renew their registration at the beginning of each semester. Semesters for which registration is not renewed will be counted toward the maximum period of study. Students who do not renew their registration cannot benefit from student rights during that semester. Students who have progressed to the thesis stage must register for the “Thesis” course.
7 - I was unable to register for my class on time. What should I do?
Students who fail to register for courses or renew their registration within the time specified in the academic calendar cannot attend courses or take exams for that semester and cannot benefit from student rights. The lost semester counts toward the total duration of study. Students in this situation must submit a written request stating their reasons to the Institute by the deadline for late course registration specified in the academic calendar. Students whose excuses are accepted by the Management Board may renew their registration.
8 - What is the normal and maximum duration for completing the registered program?
Excluding the period spent on scientific preparation, the duration for completing the program, regardless of whether registration is made for each semester, starting from the semester in which the courses related to the registered program are offered; For a non-thesis master's program, it is a minimum of two semesters and a maximum of three semesters. For thesis-based master's programs, the normal duration is four semesters, and the maximum duration is six semesters. For doctoral programs, the normal duration is eight semesters, and the maximum duration is twelve semesters for those admitted with a master's degree.
9 - Is it possible to pursue a double major or minor?
Double major/minor programs are available at Istanbul Gedik University.
10 - Is attendance mandatory in graduate programs?
Attendance at theoretical and practical courses is compulsory. Except for distance learning and teaching programs, students must attend 70% of theoretical courses and 80% of practical courses and/or other learning activities in order to take the end-of-semester exam.
11 - How do I delete optional registrations?
Students who have recently been accepted into the program they applied for may submit a request to withdraw from the program by obtaining approval from the Office of Financial Affairs ([email protected]) for the withdrawal request form available on the Institute's website, and then sending it to the Institute's email address ([email protected]).
12 - When can I apply to freeze my registration?

15 - How many semesters does the scientific preparation last, and is it added to the duration of the graduate program?
The duration of the scientific preparation program is a maximum of two semesters. Students who are unsuccessful at the end of this period will be dismissed from the program. The time spent in this program will not be included in the duration of a master's or doctoral program.
16 - How do I apply for course credit?
Applications for course exemptions can be made using the exemption application form available on the Institute's website, starting from the semester in which the student has completed their final registration.
17 - Is a student required to retake a course they failed?
Graduate students who fail elective courses may retake them if they are offered again. However, if the course is not offered or has been removed from the program, students may take another graduate course in place of the failed course, subject to the advisor's approval.
18 - When and how is a master's thesis proposal determined?
The thesis proposal form, prepared jointly by the advisor and the student, must be submitted to the institute by the end of the second semester at the latest, and it is finalized with the approval of the institute's administrative board.
19 - Can changes be made to a master's thesis proposal later on?
Any changes to be made to the thesis proposal at a later date are as stated in the thesis proposal. Changes may also be made to the thesis if deemed appropriate by the jury members during the thesis defense exam.
20 - What must be done to be eligible to take the thesis defense exam?
Students who have fulfilled the course, credit, and other requirements of the relevant program may complete the necessary procedures in accordance with the “Documents Required for Master's Thesis Submission” section of the Institute's website under the “Documents” tab.

22 - What happens to students whose thesis is rejected?
Students whose thesis has been deemed “in need of revision” must revise their thesis within three months of the exam date for master's programs and within six months for doctoral programs, and defend it again before the same jury. If the student fails to pass the defense and their thesis is not accepted, they will be dismissed from the relevant program.

Students who successfully complete their courses and seminars and register for the doctoral qualification course will be admitted to the qualification exam upon application. Qualification exams and applications are held twice a year on dates specified in the academic calendar.
26 - What is the criterion for passing the doctoral qualification exam?
The Doctoral Qualification Exam consists of two parts: written and oral. The written exam is graded on a scale of 100 points. Students who score at least 75 points on the written exam are admitted to the oral exam. To be considered successful in the oral exam, the student must score at least 75 points and be deemed successful by the jury.
27 - I failed my doctoral qualifying exam. What should I do?
Students who fail the doctoral qualification exam will be re-examined in the next semester in the department(s) in which they failed. The application procedure for the second attempt is the same as for the first attempt. Students who fail this exam will be dismissed from the doctoral program
28 - I passed the doctoral qualification exam. What is the next step?
For students who pass the qualifying exam, a thesis supervision committee is formed within one month upon the recommendation of the relevant department chair and the decision of the Institute's Administrative Board. The relevant form can be found in the “Forms and Documents” section of the graduate studies page. The student is scheduled to defend their thesis proposal within six months of the qualifying exam by the committee formed for this purpose.
29 - What is the doctoral thesis proposal defense stage? What should I do at this stage?
Students who pass the doctoral qualifying exam register for the thesis proposal course in their course registration. Students submit their thesis proposal, which includes the purpose of their research, methodology, work plan, and, if required, ethical committee approval, to the Institute at least fifteen days before the defense, to be presented to the committee members. The student defends their thesis proposal orally before the committee.
30 - My doctoral thesis proposal has been rejected. What steps should I take next?
Students whose thesis proposals are rejected are allowed to resubmit their thesis proposals within six months. Students whose thesis proposals are rejected a second time are dismissed from the University.
31 - My doctoral thesis proposal has been accepted. What are the next steps?
For doctoral students whose thesis proposals have been accepted, the thesis monitoring committee meets twice a year, once between January and June and once between July and December. Students submit a written report to the committee members at least one month before the meeting date. This report includes a summary of the work done so far and a plan for the next period. The student remains enrolled in the 'thesis monitoring' course until graduation.
32 - Does the defense of a doctoral thesis proposal count as an interim report?
The report defended in the thesis proposal is not evaluated as an interim report by the thesis monitoring committee.
33 - Can I make changes to my doctoral thesis proposal later?
If changes are necessary in the thesis proposal that has been accepted and approved, the thesis monitoring committee prepares a report on the matter and submits it to the Institute. The report, bearing the signatures of the committee members, is reviewed by the Institute's Board of Directors and a decision is made.
34 - What are the prerequisites for taking the doctoral thesis defense exam?
At least three thesis monitoring committee reports must be submitted in order to be successful. At least one article related to the thesis topic, which includes the name of the University, must be published in a national or international peer-reviewed journal or, if accepted for publication, the relevant article must be submitted to the Institute's Management Board. The thesis must be prepared in accordance with the Institute's thesis writing guidelines. The similarity report percentage of the prepared thesis must be below the limit set by the Institute (15%).
35 - Can graduates with a master's degree without a thesis apply for doctoral programs?
Students who graduated from non-thesis master's programs before February 6, 2013, may apply to doctoral programs. Students who graduated after this date cannot apply to doctoral programs.
36 - What is an ORCID number? How can I get one?
Similarities in some authors' names and changes in female researchers' surnames due to marriage, as well as differences in the spelling of names, cause problems in accessing all of a researcher's publications collectively. Orcid is a non-profit organization that uses a single digital identity to collect all of a researcher's research outputs under a single account. You can complete the registration process at orcid.org/register. After obtaining an Orcid number, it should be added to the student information system and the digital thesis data entry form at the national thesis center.
37 - What are the conditions that result in dismissal from the university?
Dismissal occurs under the following circumstances:
- Failure to complete the scientific preparation program successfully.
- Failure to complete the non-thesis master’s program within 3 semesters.
- Failure to complete coursework or seminar requirements in thesis master’s programs within 4 semesters or the thesis within the maximum duration of 6 semesters.
- Failure to meet the required credits, conditions, or thesis work in doctoral programs within the allotted time.
- Failure of the doctoral qualifying exam twice.
- Rejection of the doctoral thesis proposal twice.
- Consecutive or intermittent failure in thesis monitoring reports.
- Rejection of the thesis after a defense or upon failure to correct the thesis as required.
- Failure to meet the conditions for a non-thesis master’s diploma within the allocated time. Failure to submit the thesis and required documents after a successful defense.
- Voluntary withdrawal or transfer to another university.
